So does anybody out there use PAID Skype? I’m thinking it might be a good alternative to a landline and I’d love some feedback. Please comment if you do or have used more than the free version of Skype. Also, please let me know what country you’re in. Thanks in advance if anybody can help!

Hi! I’ve been reading here for a while but never commented before. I did want to chime in here, because we used the paid Skype for a little while. We found that the connection wasn’t the greatest, and especially when we called cell phones people seemed to not be able to hear us very well. Sometimes we’d just have to hang up and tell them we’d email them. This was a year or two ago, so I don’t know if it’s any better now though.

Hi! I think this is my first time to comment, though I’ve read your blog for a while now. 🙂I used paid skype when I lived in Ireland because it was so much cheaper than using a landline; it was also very affordable to call internationally. I used the pay per minute plan back then.Now I live in the USA and use skype for all long-distance calls — the monthly plan, not the pay per minute thing. I think that is a USA thing, not international, though. We do also have a basic landline service so we can receive local calls and have emergency 911 calling (skype doesn’t work with emergency numbers).It does tie you to a computer, but I can live with that inconvenience in order to have long-distance calling for so cheap!

Sorry, I only use the free version. My cousin used the paid version but he is intellectually disabled and got into all sorts of strife ringing people in the US etc and running up a big bill. Not sure that really helps you but its all I know!

It’s the only way I can afford to call my parents who live In South Africa. (I am in America) Sometimes my mom complains that the connection isn’t the best on her side…but I’ve never had the same problem. I blame it on the communications systems in South Africa – it is not optimal. I pre-pay for calls via paypal and only get charged for the actual minutes we spend on the computer/phone – I am not sure if that is what you mean by the paid version.

I bought 10.00 US dollars worth of minutes before a two month trip to Mexico. I had a really great connection (I was 1200 miles from where I made the call to which was back in the states.) plus that was way more than I ended up needing.I’ve also communicated with a friend who was in Bolivia (me being in Texas). We occasionally had troubles with it disconnecting, but we could usually get it back up and running. (and that was skype to skype, not skype to phone and may have had to do with internet speed.)I imagine you could get a wireless headset and possibly have pretty good range to where you wouldn’t be tied down right at the computer.

Hi Kristy,We use Internode’s VOIP called Nodephone which I reckon is a great service – I’ll demo it when you are back but have a look at it on the web – they also are our ISP.Hope you are enjoying your time away – we miss you.
